Cancer continues to be one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in the world and also in Spain, where the number of cancers diagnosed in 2024 will reach 286,664, according to calculations by the Spanish Network of Cancer Registries (REDECAN).

Also almost 10 million people die every year in the world from cancer, more than 16 million are expected to be in 2040; 160,000 in Spain. Incidence and mortality are increasing due to an increasingly older population, but the trend is more towards the chronicification of the disease thanks to the latest advances in treatment.

The most innovative is minimally invasive surgery, advanced chemotherapy and radiotherapy combined with the new hyperthermia technique and the use of new drugs and molecular targets.

Peritoneal carcinomatosis has been considered a fatal entity and classically treated palliatively. Intraperitoneal chemotherapy with hyperthermia is a promising therapeutic modality against peritoneal carcinomatosis, with a demonstrated substantial improvement in results. Through this technique, the antineoplastic effects of chemotherapy are enhanced by heat by virtue of increasing cell permeability.

The administration of high doses of intraperitoneal chemotherapy is possible without renal or systemic toxicity. At the same time, side effects are minimized, since the patient remains anesthetized and all parameters are monitored at all times.

With respect to radiotherapy, proton radiotherapy and radiotherapy for benign pathology gain importance. L.D.B./M. T. T. (SyM)
