Suriname Achieves a Milestone: No Local Cases of Malaria since 2021

Suriname has become the first country in the Amazon region to report no local cases of malaria since 2021. Despite being surrounded by countries grappling with high rates of malaria, Suriname’s successful strategies have effectively eliminated local transmission of the deadly disease. On Friday, the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO) recognized Suriname’s efforts and awarded the country for its remarkable achievement.

Only twenty years ago, Suriname used to have tens of thousands of cases of locally transmitted malaria. However, the nation has managed to bring this number down to zero. While the disease may still enter the country through travelers, particularly from neighboring countries like Guyana, Brazil, and French Guiana, the local population is now safe from its transmission within Surinamese borders.

“A malaria-free Suriname is of great importance for the health and well-being of the local population,” stated Marthelise Eersel, the chair of the Malaria Elimination Task Force. Malaria, a potentially fatal disease, is caused by the Plasmodium parasite, which is transmitted to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes. Suriname’s efforts to eradicate the disease have undoubtedly improved the lives of its citizens.

In addition to Suriname, several other regions were also recognized for their achievements in malaria control. The Dominican Republic, Belize, the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, and the Brazilian city of Manaus were all named Malaria Champions of North and South America by PAHO on Friday. This recognition reflects the positive impact of the various projects implemented in these regions, significantly improving the health and well-being of their populations.

Suriname’s success story serves as an inspiration for other countries in the region, highlighting the significance of implementing effective strategies against malaria. As the fight against this deadly disease continues, Suriname’s achievement stands as a testament to the power of dedication, persistence, and collaborative efforts in creating a healthier world for all.]
