The former president of South America’s Suriname has been confirmed dead in Desi Bauter, where he disappeared after being sentenced to 20 years in prison last year for murdering political opponents. Age 79.

Bauterser, a former soldier, staged a coup in 1980 and implemented military dictatorship. In particular, in 1982, 15 people, including opposition politicians, journalists, lawyers, and university professors, who had spoken out against the military regime in Bauter, were murdered, drawing international condemnation. In 1987, as his domestic support base weakened and pressure from the international community increased, he temporarily stepped down from power, but eventually staged a coup again in 1990 and remained in power until 1992. Afterwards, he continued to work as a politician and businessman and reigned as a powerful figure behind the scenes, winning the presidential elections in 2010 and 2015 and serving a second term until 2020.
Then, in December last year, a Suriname court found Bauterser guilty of direct involvement in the murder of anti-government figures in 1982 and sentenced him to 20 years in prison. After the first trial began in 2007, Bauterser used all possible means to avoid conviction, including ‘self-pardon’ through Congress and ‘suspension of trial’ through the Minister of Justice, but in the end, he was found guilty 37 years after the incident. am.
However, Bauterser, who was being tried without detention at the time, disappeared after saying, “I will voluntarily appear before the execution authorities,” and his death has now been confirmed. The place of death or cause of death is unknown.
