Today, Thursday, the Chief of Staff of the Egyptian Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Ahmed Khalifa, made a surprise visit to inspect the security situation and security measures on the border with the Gaza Strip.

The Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces stressed that the main mission of the Armed Forces is to preserve the country’s borders in all strategic directions and that the men of the Armed Forces are capable of defending the country’s borders, stressing the importance of having knowledge and will and maintaining high physical fitness to ensure the implementation of all tasks with high professionalism.

He also checked on the living and administrative conditions of the combatant and the security system for the northeastern border line, and listened to a detailed explanation that included the method of work and coordination between all specializations to achieve complete control over the international border line around the clock.

The Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces thanked the security personnel for their efforts in securing the international border line, stressing the confidence of the General Command of the Armed Forces in their combat efficiency, while being careful not to succumb to rumors and gossip that aim to undermine the Egyptian state.

The inspection tour was attended by the Commander of the Border Guard Forces, the Deputy Chief of Operations of the Armed Forces, the Commander of the Second Field Army, the Acting Chief of Military Intelligence, the Commander of the Special Forces, and a number of Armed Forces commanders.

The atmosphere between Egypt and Israel has been tense in the past few days due to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s insistence on keeping Israeli forces in the Philadelphi Corridor, which separates the Gaza Strip from Egypt.

Netanyahu said on Wednesday that Israel would not agree to a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip unless it ensured that the border area between the southern Gaza Strip and Egypt (the Philadelphi corridor) would not be used as a lifeline for Hamas.

The Philadelphi Corridor, which runs along the southern edge of the Gaza Strip on the border with Egypt, is one of the main obstacles to reaching an agreement to stop the fighting in Gaza and release Israeli hostages in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners.

Netanyahu has faced heavy criticism from many in Israel for his insistence, including many of his own senior security officials who believe Israeli forces are capable of targeted intervention if necessary to prevent any smuggling.
