The deadline for submitting candidates for the position of Attorney General in place of Avichai Mandelblit, who will retire at the end of February 2022, will end today (Monday).
Globes has learned that one of the candidates expected to join the honorable mention list is Prof. Barak Medina, Rector of the Hebrew University and an expert in constitutional law. Prof. Medina is considered a successor to former Supreme Court President Aharon Barak when it comes to judicial activism.
The candidates for Justice Minister Gideon Saar for the position of Speaker are Adv. Gali Bahrav-Myara, Adv. Raz Nazri and Adv. Roi Sheindorf. The most prominent candidate for the position on the part of Saar is Adv. Bahrav-Miara, a former Tel Aviv District Attorney (civil) and currently a private lawyer in Dudi Tadmor’s office.
Although Rabbi Miara is wanted by the minister, she is likely to encounter difficulty in the search committee, given her lack of experience in the criminal field and in the field of counseling and legislation. Saar prepared for this “problem” in advance and decided to ask the search committee to recommend a number of candidates, from whom the government will select the desired and worthy candidate in its eyes. This is how Saar intended to increase her chances.
Minister Saar left himself an option to propose additional names, but ultimately chose to stick with these candidates. In addition to the minister’s three candidates, Defense Spokesman Adv. Itai Ofir will also be on the list, after being recommended by committee member MK Zvi Hauser.
Committee member Prof. Ron Shapira proposed District Court Judge Dr. Michal Agmon-Gonen, Dr. Aviad Bakshi and Prof. Ariel Bandor.
Prof. Barak Medina will be proposed by the committee member, former Minister Dan Meridor.
The committee member on behalf of the Bar Association, Adv. Tami Ullman, decided in the opinion of the head of the bar Avi Chimi not to nominate a candidate on her behalf. According to Adv. Chimi, the bar will promote values and not candidates.
Sources in the committee also tried to find out from the chief military attorney Former attorney Sharon Afek, however, decided to give up the candidacy.
