MIDWOOD, Brooklyn – Newly released surveillance video has shed light on a tragic incident that unfolded at a Mobil gas station in Brooklyn, resulting in a fatal stabbing.
The incident occurred on Saturday night around 11:15 pm at the gas station located on Coney Island Avenue. The footage shows Oshae Sibley and his friends engaged in some lighthearted horseplay while fueling their vehicle. However, tensions escalated when a customer in red shorts held the door and exchanged words with the group.
Witnesses identified the customer in red shorts as a 17-year-old employee of a nearby smoke shop. Sibley, wearing light-colored shorts with no shirt, approached the man, initiating a conversation. Within seconds, the victim’s friends joined the altercation.
A witness attempted to mediate by advising both parties to leave the store and avoid fights. However, despite the intervention, tempers flared yet again, leading to a face-to-face confrontation between the suspect and Sibley on the sidewalk.
As Sibley walked away to join his friends getting into a car, the confrontation suddenly reignited, culminating in a scuffle on the sidewalk. It was during this altercation that the suspect fatally stabbed Sibley, who was only 28 years old.
The suspect fled the scene, leaving witnesses to describe him as someone who had caused trouble at the gas station before. Witnesses reported that the individual often used the gas station’s bathroom and had a confrontational attitude towards the workers.
Authorities are currently investigating the incident as a potential bias crime due to the victim’s sexual orientation. Sibley, an openly gay professional dancer, was proud of his identity. Beckenbaur Hamilton, Sibley’s next-door neighbor and also gay, strongly believes it was a hate crime. He expressed concerns about the homophobic nature of the neighborhood and the need for caution in self-presentation.
While the investigation into the stabbing continues, no arrests have been made, leaving the community on edge and demanding justice.
