Title: Foundation Against Cancer Calls for Restrictions on E-Cigarettes Following Survey on Youth Vaping

Date: October 2023

The Foundation Against Cancer has recently released the findings of a survey conducted to understand the usage and behavior of e-cigarettes among young people and their environment. Based on the results, the organization is urging the Minister of Health to implement stricter regulations on e-cigarettes, including reducing the number of permitted flavors and banning the display of tobacco products at points of sale.

The survey targeted three groups: young people aged 15 to 20, pedagogical staff, and parents with children aged 12 to 20. The results revealed that young people between the ages of 15 and 20 have a different perspective on e-cigarettes compared to older individuals. While those over 20 view e-cigarettes as a tool to quit smoking, the younger age group considers vaping as an activity in itself.

Interestingly, only one in five young people expressed their intention to quit smoking through e-cigarettes. For them, vaping has become a regular part of their daily lives, with 35% having already experimented with e-cigarettes, 32% doing so in the past year, and 16% currently vaping. Furthermore, 61% of these young individuals have friends who also use e-cigarettes, and 59% know someone below the age of 16 who engages in vaping.

Additionally, the survey highlighted that six in ten parents were unaware that their child vaped, while 29% of parents had no knowledge of the type of e-cigarette their child was using. Disposable e-cigarettes were found to be popular among young people due to their convenience, affordability, and concealability. Shockingly, only 32% of parents were aware of their child’s use of disposable e-cigarettes.

The survey also explored the motivations behind young people’s vaping habits. The main reasons cited were the appealing flavors (37%), stress relief (36%), and a perceived calming effect (34%). Additionally, 27% of users believed that e-cigarettes were less harmful than traditional cigarettes.

In response to these findings, the Foundation Against Cancer is advocating for significant restrictions on e-cigarette availability. Given the strong appeal of various flavors, the organization is calling for a drastic reduction in the number of permitted flavors. Furthermore, they propose a ban on the display of tobacco products at points of sale, particularly in night shops, to discourage impulse purchases. The Foundation also supports a complete ban on disposable e-cigarettes.

It is important to note that these proposed measures come with the aim of curbing the prevalence of e-cigarette use among young people and addressing concerns related to their health and well-being.
