The mood of young people in Germany is not good. This is especially true for young women, according to the results of a survey. The end of the pandemic hasn’t changed much about that. The fears also have to do with politics.

According to a nationwide online survey, young women are more worried than young men. The worries have decreased somewhat between the time of the corona pandemic and this year, according to a report published on Wednesday about the “JuCo study“ from the universities of Hildesheim and Frankfurt am Main.

For the study, 1,185 young people between the ages of 15 and 30 from all over Germany were surveyed online in the spring. 68 percent of those surveyed were girls and young women, the average age was 20 years.

According to the authors, data collected during the pandemic shows a massive impact on young people’s everyday lives, their contacts, educational and creative opportunities, mental health and well-being. These burdens would have left their mark.

The genders expressed different opinions about future prospects. At 61 percent, just as many girls and women expressed fear of their own future as in the previous survey in December 2021. Even fewer said they were not afraid than in the previous study (15 instead of 21 percent).

In contrast, fewer boys and men expressed fear of their own future than in December 2021 (39 instead of 45 percent). The proportion of those who said they were not afraid remained almost the same (37 instead of 36 percent).

According to the survey, emotional stress has apparently decreased slightly compared to 2021. Of the girls and young women surveyed, 34 percent felt burdened instead of the previous 40 percent. Among boys and men, 25 percent said this instead of the previous 28 percent. Among girls and women, the proportion of those who did not feel burdened fell from 27 to 26 percent. Among boys and men, however, the proportion of those who were not exposed rose from 39 percent to 47 percent.

Concerns about what is currently happening in Germany also decreased among those surveyed compared to December 2021. The proportion among women and girls fell from 81 to 62 percent, and among men and boys from 70 to 57 percent. The proportion of those who were not worried doubled among women and girls from five to ten percent, and among men and boys it rose from 13 to 19 percent.

However, at the same time, the opinion of all respondents that their concerns were not being heard in politics increased on average (76 instead of the previous 73 percent). The authors conclude that the proclaimed end of the pandemic and the lifting of the associated restrictions have not led to significantly more peace of mind among young people.

The “JuCo” study 2023 is the fourth in the “Childhood-Youth Family in the Corona Period” research network between the two universities. It is made up of the Institute for Social and Organizational Education in Hildesheim and the Institute for Social Education and Adult Education in Frankfurt.
