The first cases of tumors date back several thousand years. Although it has been in recent decades that they have been positioned as a public health problem. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), they caused almost 10 million deaths in 2020 and the trend continues to increase. The most worrying thing is that they can develop in any organ or tissue, but this time we are going to focus on survival during the different stages of breast cancer.

In the first instance, it is one of the most common on the entire planet. Every year, 2.26 million new cases and 685 thousand deaths are detected. For this reason, information campaigns are an important part. The aim is to raise awareness about the relevance of early diagnoses.

Panorama in Mexico and the rest of the world

Breast cancer affects women of any age, although rates increase in adulthood. In 2020, approximately 685 thousand women died worldwide as a result of this disease. In Mexico, 29,929 new cases and 7,931 secondary deaths were reported from this type of cancer.

Since 2006, in Mexico, breast cancer is the leading cause of death due to malignant tumor in women. Quality of life may be compromised and this condition could even be incurable, since it continues to be detected in locally advanced or metastatic stages that require further treatment.

The best ways to detect any case of breast cancer is through self-examination and mammography. In the first, the woman must periodically make visual and tactile checks on her own body. If there is any abnormality, she should immediately go to a doctor to undergo a professional examination and rule out risks. While for the second option, it is recommended that it be annual after turning 40 years old.

However, survival rates at different stages of breast cancer vary greatly. According to the American Cancer SocietyIn the former it is almost 100 percent because you can act immediately and start with the appropriate treatment for each patient. That is why it is so important to identify this type of tumor as soon as possible.

For its part, from stage 2 there is a decrease because the figure is 93 percent. While in stage 3 it is 72 percent. The biggest drawback is that in stage 4 it is only 22 percent because most tumors spread to other organs and it is very difficult to save women.

How can risks be reduced?

On the other hand, risk factors that can be modified to reduce the risk of this disease are: smoking, alcohol consumption, overweight or obesity, sedentary lifestyle, inadequate diet with processed foods rich in fats and sugars.

There are other factors that cannot be changed and that increase the possibility of developing breast cancer, such as being a woman – which does not exclude male cases -, age, having a first-degree relative (mother, daughters, sisters) with breast cancer. breast or ovary and have dense breasts.
