CHENNAI: A ‘tender’ is to be issued in January to set up 1,000 MW solar power plant in six districts including Tiruvarur.

Various companies have set up 5,800 MW solar power plants in Tamil Nadu. The electricity generated from them is purchased by the Board.

But the power board has not set up its own solar power plant.

Subsequently, the Minister of Power Senthil Balaji announced in the Assembly the announcement to set up solar power parks in every district.

A letter was sent to all the District Collectors on behalf of the Electricity Board requesting allocation of government lands for that purpose. 5 acres of land is required to set up a 1 MW power plant. In the first phase, 3,293 acres of land in the districts of Thiruvarur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Karur, Salem and Nagai have been identified and converted to the power board.

In these districts, it has been decided to set up solar power plants ranging from 50 MW to 200 MW, with a total capacity of 1,000 MW.

It is planned to call for tender in January 2023 to carry out the construction work.
