The “Tagesthemen” is usually a place for serious news. On Thursday, a laugh caught everyone’s eye. Once again in the spotlight: Susanne Daubner.

You could almost say that Susanne Daubner is turning into a laughing stock on the first channel. But that is of course unfair. The ARD presenter does a serious job every day in the public broadcaster’s news programs. But it is not the first time that the 63-year-old presenter has fallen out of character – and caused a stir with fits of laughter that are sometimes more, sometimes less.

And so it is again now. It is the 25th minute of “Tagesthemen” on Thursday evening. Susanne Daubner takes over the last news block of the show, before that her colleague Jessy Wellmer has led through topics such as the debt of Deutsche Bahn and basic child benefits. It is now Daubner’s turn to talk about the Olympic Games. The viewers see her in a petrol-colored jacket as she starts to speak, but suddenly stops.

A voice can be heard from off-screen. “One day before the Olympic opening ceremony” is what it says from an unknown direction – without Susanne Daubner moving her lips. The sound of the voice is similar to that of Jessy Wellmer, but she is not in the picture. Susanne Daubner seems surprised. While a picture of the German women’s national team with the inscription “Germany beats Australia 3:0” can be seen in the background, Daubner starts laughing.

At first, the experienced newsreader pulls herself together, but she is overcome by laughter again and again. When Daubner disappears from the picture because the report on the Olympics is shown, you can still hear her laughing loudly. She almost swallows her last sentence, the last words “against Australia” are drowned out by the laughter.

It was initially unclear how the glitch had come about. But a broadcaster later confirmed, upon request from t-online, that it was Daubner’s colleague who had caused the laughter. “Jessy Wellmer wanted to introduce the Olympic sports as usual, but quickly realized that this report was still part of the news block,” said the responsible NDR, adding: “A misunderstanding that both of them had to laugh about.”

Apparently, the broadcaster took the matter with humor. It is also not the first time that Susanne Daubner has provoked laughter with such an incident. Her outburst from September 2023 is notorious. At that time, she was so overcome by a fit of laughter that she fought back tears in front of the camera.

“I’m really sorry about that,” she apologized to the viewers. But they reacted calmly. “So nice. I love it,” was one comment. The audience appreciated the fact that this was a brief human moment that made the otherwise robot-like presenters on the first channel seem approachable.

This time, too, this is evident in the majority of reactions. “She did it again! Very likeable,” writes one user on X, sharing Daubner’s laughter.
