Suspected Dengue Case in Modena, Treatments Underway

by time news

The first of three disinfestation interventions planned following a suspected case of Dengue in the city of Modena reported by the Public Hygiene service of the Health Authority is taking place as a precaution this night, between Sunday 25 and Monday 26 August. The symptoms detected are those of viral fever, typical of tropical areas: the virus is transmitted by mosquitoes of the Aedes genus, the so-called tiger mosquito, and is of annoying symptomatic development, but generally of non-lethal outcome.

The area of the intervention, frequented by the person suspected of having contracted the virus, is in the historic center, between Canalchiaro and Largo San Francesco, Largo San Giacomo, Piazzale Redecocca, Rua dei Frati minori, Rua Muro, Via Bertolda, Via dei Balugola, Vie Delle Rose, Via Ruggera, Via San Giacomo, Via San Paolo, Via Servi, Via Stella, Via Tre Re, Vicolo De’ Grassetti and Vicolo Frassone.

If the laboratory tests give a negative result, the disinfestation treatments will be suspended.

The 2024 Arbovirosis Surveillance Plan prepared by the Region provides in these cases for the implementation of adulticide and larvicide interventions and the elimination of larval outbreaks within a radius of 100 meters from the place where the cases of contagion occurred.

The plan includes, in particular, three interventions in succession: disinfestation with adulticides for the maximum possible reduction of the mosquito population for three consecutive nights; the removal of outbreaks in private areas, with door-to-door interventions; the repetition of larvicides in public drains.

The ordinance signed by the mayor requires that pest control workers be granted access to open areas of buildings to carry out treatments, that larval outbreaks present in private courtyard areas be removed, and indicates, among the precautionary measures, the closing of windows during the night hours. Windows and doors must be well closed at night, therefore, and the suspension of the operation of air exchange systems. Furthermore, pets must be kept indoors and their outdoor shelters and furnishings, such as bowls and waterers, must be protected with plastic sheets. Even fruit and vegetables from gardens must be hermetically protected.

To consume fruit and vegetables sprayed with insecticides, you will need to wait 15 days, they will need to be washed thoroughly and the fruit will need to be peeled. Furniture and children’s toys left outside and exposed to the treatment must be cleaned using washable or disposable gloves. In case of accidental contact with the insecticide product, wash the affected part of the body thoroughly with soap and water.
