Two suspects of committing four contract killings in 1997-2001 were detained in St. Petersburg and the Novgorod region, the main department of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs for St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region reported.

“In St. Petersburg, detectives detained 56-year-old Anatoly B., and in the city of Borovichi, Novgorod Region, 53-year-old Igor V. In the 1990s, both were members of the liquidation team of one of the then existing criminal groups in St. Petersburg,” the department said in a statement.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs believes that the detainees were involved in four murders: in 1997 – two representatives of criminal groups, in 1999 – a 23-year-old girl who was previously a member of a criminal group, in 2001 – a St. Petersburg businessman to seize his business. In addition, in 1996, one of the detainees organized an assassination attempt on two representatives of criminal circles because of a conflict with them.
