The successful operation was carried out at the beginning of July by the officers of the Organized Crime Investigation Board of the Chief Police Commissariat of Panevėžys County.
By carrying out a complex of various measures, after a long and complicated investigation, having information that a very large quantity of narcotic or psychotropic substances may be transported, they detained an indistinguishable tractor-trailer with a semi-trailer on July 3.
Suspecting that the semi-trailer may contain hiding places, the criminal police officers called in Lithuanian customs officials.
They carefully X-rayed the semi and determined that it could contain hiding places and required special equipment to access them.
Criminalists of Panevėžys County Chief Police Commissariat also used Panevėžys firefighters for further actions. The latter patiently dismantled the bottom of the tractor semi-trailer centimeter by centimeter with the available equipment and found a very ingeniously hidden cargo.
“Assessing the size of the detained illegal cargo, the route of the tractor and semi-trailer, the persons involved in the criminal act, it can be assumed that it is a transit cargo transported on the traditional West-East route,” the police report reads.
According to the information available to the officials, the semi-trailer was supposed to reach Russia. It was established that 2 identical semi-trailers with the same identification numbers were used to disguise the mechanism of this criminal act, to hide the traces of crimes, and their license plates were often changed.
As a result of the above-mentioned criminal act, 2 persons were detained and subsequently arrested: citizens of Russia (born in 1967) and Lithuanian (born in 1982).
The investigation is ongoing and there may be more suspects.
Currently, a pre-trial investigation into the transportation of a large amount of drugs is being conducted, it is being led by the prosecutors of the Organized Crime and Corruption Investigation Department of the Panevėžys District Prosecutor’s Office. This criminal offense is punishable by 10 to 15 years of imprisonment.
The amount of narcotic substances found is one of the biggest catches of officers of the Panevėžys County Chief Police Commissariat in the last few years.
