Pudukkottai District, Keeranur has a Primary Cooperative Agricultural and Rural Development Bank. Top officials were informed that there was malpractice in the disbursement of jewelery loan in this bank. This was followed by an investigation into the jewelery loans in the bank by the Thanjavur Zonal Survey Committee of the neighboring district without the local district authorities.
According to the list, the total number of jewelery parcels was 934 and a total of Rs. 3 crore 63 lakh 14 thousand 200 loans were disbursed. But there were only 832 total of parcels in the bank. 2 crore 54 lakh 96 thousand 700 loan amount has been given for it. But it was revealed that he had given a loan of Rs 1 crore 8 lakh 17 thousand 500 without any jewelery. The employees of the bank accounted for this amount as if they had mortgaged the jewelery in the name of their relatives and lent it.
Bank secretary Neelakandan, supervisor Sakthivel and gold appraiser Kanagavelu were involved in the scam. The study team informed their superiors about this. Following this, the Regional Secretary of the Co-operative Societies, Umamageswari, ordered the dismissal of the concerned bank secretary Neelakandan and supervisor Sakthivel. Also, comedian Kanakavelu was fired. Three more persons were lodged with the police and an investigation was underway.
Meanwhile, bank secretary Neelakandan, who was sacked following a complaint that he had misappropriated Rs 1.8 crore in jewelery loans from the Keeranur Co-operative Bank, committed suicide by hanging himself in the toilet of his house today.
Police have registered a case and are investigating the incident. The suicide of a bank official who was suspended on a complaint of misconduct has caused a great stir in the area.
