At the autonomous port of Cotonou, unloading operations for goods destined for Niger are suspended until further notice from October 25, 2023. Thus, the port authorities have decided through the publication of a circular note. They mention ”operational and congestion reasons”. However, the general director offers three facilitation solutions to economic operators whose cargoes of goods are pending collection in the port area of Cotonou. The latter should now proceed either to release their orders on site in Benin; a change of route; or simply carry out transshipmentre-export. This decision appears to be a new turn of the screw after the closure of the borders between Benin and Niger following the coup d’état that took place in Niamey on July 26. A closure which created a road blockade in Malanville where there are several hundred large trucks loaded with multiple loads of various products including humanitarian aid sent by UN institutions and organizations. Furthermore, not so long ago, the authorities of Niger had categorically refused the use of a road corridor through Benin. They had shown a preference for Togo.
