Two young people were arrested and admitted to having entered the college of Lisieux (Calvados) where the principal of the establishment was found dead on Friday, the Caen prosecutor’s office announced on Wednesday.

Aged 17 and 19, these two people admitted to having entered Friday “by breaking a door” in the Pierre-Simon de Laplace college in Lisieux, but claim “to have left the premises before the arrival of Stéphane Vitel [le principal, NDLR]which seems to be confirmed by the exploitation of the telephone of one of them”, according to the press release from the prosecution.

A first person was arrested on Monday evening and the second on Wednesday August 16 in the morning, a source familiar with the matter said. On Saturday, the Lisieux prosecutor’s office had reported “a trace of a break-in on a secondary door of the college” but there was “no disorder within the establishment”.

A judicial investigation will be opened this Wednesday afternoon, according to the prosecution. The latter specifies that the file was transferred from the Lisieux public prosecutor’s office to that of Caen, “the only public prosecutor’s office in the department authorized to exercise public action with regard to minors”, one of the arrested being 17 years old.

The autopsy could not confirm anything

The principal’s autopsy, performed on Monday, “could neither exclude the intervention of a third party nor establish with certainty a natural cause of death”, announced the Lisieux prosecutor’s office on Monday.

Friday around 6 a.m., Stéphane Vitel was preparing to go on vacation with his wife and their two children when he was informed of the triggering of an anti-intrusion alarm in the establishment he managed. READ ALSOLisieux: Stéphane Vitel, suspicious death of a principal in a sensitive neighborhood

He had made a detour to go to college where he had entered alone, leaving his family in the car. The latter being worried not to see him return, his daughter had in turn entered the establishment and had found him unconscious. Intervened quickly, the emergency services could not revive him, the 48-year-old victim being in cardiac arrest when they arrived.

The public prosecutor of Caen and the director of the judicial police of Rouen will hold a press conference at the Caen courthouse on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., indicates the press release from the prosecution.
