The SDGs are universal, and apply to all citizens, governments and companies or organizations. These, in addition to addressing environmental issues, seek to achieve goals in areas of community investment, equity, among others.

In 2015, the United Nations General Assembly designed 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which establish a “plan to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all.”

These occur in the context that the indiscriminate use of natural resources and the production of polluting agents are degrading ecosystems, which prevents the natural cycles that provide the vital functions that sustain life on Earth.

The 17 SDGs cover the economic, social and environmental spheres. Some of them are End of poverty, Gender equality, Affordable and clean energy, among others.

The goal is to achieve these SDGs by 2030 and this requires the collaboration of citizens, governments, companies and organizations.

What do companies do to achieve Sustainable Development?

In 1987 the Bruntland Commission defined the Sustainable development as one that meets current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to satisfy their own needs.

For a company to be sustainable, it must achieve a balance between its economic, social and environmental objectives. Among these conditions are having transparent business practices, being inclusive, promoting the use of renewable energy, among others.

An example of a sustainable company is Entel, a telecommunications company that recently managed to position itself as a Latin American leader in sustainability in the Standard & Poors Global yearbook, known as The Sustainability Yearbook 2024.

In the yearbook, Entel obtained a score of 76 out of 100 in the S&P 2023 Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA).

To achieve this, Entel had to take actions such as the issuance in 2021 of the industry’s first international sustainable bond in Chile, for a value of US$800 million, which has the objective of financing infrastructure and essential services related to digital inclusion and innovation. in the local market.

In 2022, Entel carried out the “Donate your equipment” campaign, which benefited more than 10,000 students with recovered cell phones, CPUs, notebooks and tablets.

Additionally, in 2024, the company launched its new Sustainability Strategy 2024-2030, which focuses on three strategic transformations: Inclusivity, Sustainabilityy Responsibility.

In turn, Entel has been the only South American telecommunications company present in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index in the DJSI Chile and DJSI MILA Pacific Alliance categories. It stands out that the company has remained in this index for eight consecutive years, improving its performance in 15 of the 25 criteria evaluated.
