Solar lifts, less artificial snow, chip grease for snow groomers: The year 2023 has shown that skiing can also be more sustainable. And in the Austrian Hochkönig region, alpine huts now serve vegan food.

The night before, nature made its contribution to sustainability: It snowed in Salzburger Land, and the white layer now covers the winter world, including the idle snow cannons on the edge of the piste.

With this picture we set off on the “Pflanzerltour”, a vegan-vegetarian safari through the Hochkönig ski area. There are 35 huts here, more than in any other ski area in the Alps. The competition is apparently so inventive and progressive that the country’s “only vegan certified region” has emerged in the middle of Austria, one of the countries with the highest meat consumption in Europe. We will head to four huts and ponder the future prospects of an industry that is undergoing unprecedented change.
