Arenal Volcano National Park
Arenal Volcano National Park is a national park located roughly in the center of Costa Rica and part of the Arenal Huetor Norte Conservation Area. The park is home to Arenal Volcano, which was considered dormant until a major eruption in 1968 and is now the most active volcano in the country. It is located near Lake Arenal, home to the country’s largest hydroelectric project, the Lake Arenal Dam.
There is another volcano here called Chato. It is also called Cerro Chato (Mount Chato) because it has been inactive for about 3500 years
There are lodges and hotels for tourists in and around the park. Some of these have hot springs. There is a volcano museum and a ranger station within the national park.
Eight of Costa Rica’s 12 life zones and 16 protected reserves in the area between the Guanacaste and Tilarán mountains, including Lake Arenal, are located in the Arenal Huether Norte Conservation Area.
