The favored Viennese Violets showed themselves to be the better team from the start, resulting in a narrow 1-0 away win. Reinhold Ranftl the winner of the match, although the hosts, despite a strong defensive performance, were unable to find any way to put the Violets in serious trouble.
Head coach Philipp Riederer can be proud of his team. The Horners gave ADMIRAL Bundesliga team FK Austria Wien a big fight in the round of 16 of the UNIQA ÖFB Cup and only lost narrowly.
Reinhold Ranftl scored the goal of the evening
The start of the game is characterized by the control ball relays of the guests from Vienna. Player Dominik Fitz made his first statement in the 18th minute with a dangerous cross, which Nik Prelec sent straight across the goal. SV Horn held up defensively and were able to record their first shot on goal of the game with a free kick in the 10th minute, which, however, left Austrian keeper Mirko Kos without any threat.
The signs were still clear: Austria Vienna dominated the game, and Horner focused on counter-attacking opportunities. The visitors finally took the lead in the 36th minute. Reinhold Ranftl took advantage of the disharmony in Horner’s defense after Nik Prelec’s blocked header and scored in the follow-up after his first effort was blocked. With a slight deflection, the ball landed in the net and gave the violets the lead.
Horner’s resistance and missed opportunities
The second half started with another great chance for Austria. After an accurate cross from Dominik Fitz, Andreas Gruber almost had the goal. The Horners fought bravely, but were too helpless in the end. In the 61st minute, Matteo Perez Vinlöf narrowly missed the hosts’ goal with a long-range shot, and the second division side continued to struggle to create clear-cut chances.
It was only towards the end of the game that the hosts felt their chance again. In the 89th minute, Erion Aljiji took a promising shot, which Austrian goalkeeper Mirko Kos parred. This opportunity was the last significant offensive move by the Waldviertel team, who, despite great efforts, could not find their way back into the game in the final minutes.
After four minutes of extra time, the referee called the game off and Austria celebrated a hard fought but deserved 1-0 victory. By reaching the quarter-finals of the ÖFB Cup, Austria Wien are keeping their title ambitions alive this season, and SV Horn can now fully focus on the series.

Time.news Editor: Welcome to our segment where we explore the latest developments in sports! Today, we’re joined by Dr. Anna Weber, a sports analyst and expert in football dynamics. Anna, thank you for being here.
Dr. Anna Weber: Thank you for having me! It’s great to discuss the intricacies of the game, especially after an exciting match like last night’s.
Editor: Absolutely! Last night, FK Austria Vienna faced off against SV Horn in the Round of 16 of the UNIQA ÖFB Cup, and it was quite an entertaining match. Austria Vienna emerged victorious with a narrow 1-0 win, thanks to Reinhold Ranftl’s goal. What did you think about their performance?
Dr. Weber: Austria Vienna showed incredible consistency throughout the match. Their ability to maintain possession and control the midfield was evident from the start. Even though they had the lion’s share of the ball, I was impressed with how SV Horn managed to stay defensively solid.
Editor: Indeed, SV Horn’s defense held strong despite the pressure. Head coach Philipp Riederer must have been pleased with his team’s resilience, wouldn’t you say?
Dr. Weber: Definitely! Riederer can take pride in how his team executed the game plan. They were organized at the back and showed great discipline, which can be particularly challenging against a team like Austria Vienna that is known for their attacking prowess.
Editor: Austria Vienna’s Dominik Fitz really seemed to set the tone with his dangerous crosses, especially in the early minutes. How crucial do you think his role was in the team’s strategy?
Dr. Weber: Fitz’s ability to create scoring opportunities is key to Austria Vienna’s attacking strategy. His crosses not only create immediate chances but also stretch the opposing defense, creating spaces for others to exploit. The more effective he is on the wing, the more options the team has in the final third.
Editor: And what about Ranftl’s winning goal? It felt like a moment of opportunism from him in a match where chances were scarce.
Dr. Weber: Exactly! That’s what separates good players from great ones—the ability to capitalize on a moment of disorder in the opponent’s defense. Ranftl was in the right place at the right time, and that goal was a testament to his sharpness and awareness in the game.
Editor: Looking ahead, how do you think both teams can build on this match? What are some adjustments you anticipate they’ll make going forward?
Dr. Weber: For Austria Vienna, maintaining their attacking momentum and finding more efficient ways to convert possession into goals will be crucial. For SV Horn, they should be proud of their performance but need to develop a more potent counter-attacking strategy to threaten teams consistently. Both teams have the potential to achieve their goals if they learn and adapt from this experience.
Editor: Great insights, Anna! Thank you for sharing your expertise with us today. It’s always fascinating to gain a deeper understanding of the strategies and performances behind these matches.
Dr. Weber: Thank you for having me! I look forward to discussing more matches in the future. There’s always so much to learn in the world of football.
