Moldova’s energy situation remains critical as the country prepares for the winter season, according to the Aid and Foreign Trade Minister Johan Forssell. The crisis has been further exacerbated by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, leading to severe limitations on Russian gas deliveries to Moldova.
Forssell stated, “Energy is used as a weapon,” highlighting the impact of geopolitical conflicts on energy supplies. To address this pressing issue, a donor conference is scheduled to be held in the Moldovan capital, Chisinau, where Sweden will present its support.
During the conference, Sweden will provide SEK 200 million to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) for their initiatives in Moldova. These investments will focus on energy efficiency and environmental improvements, aiming to reduce Moldova’s dependence on Russia’s fossil fuel energy.
“The goal is to help Moldova become independent of dirty fossil energy from Russia,” Forssell emphasized. Moldova, being a vulnerable and poor country, faces immense pressure from Russia, requiring urgent assistance to ensure vulnerable households can afford their energy bills throughout the winter period.
An additional SEK 100 million will be allocated to a fund established by Moldova and the UN program, UNDP. This fund will prioritize providing immediate support to vulnerable households, allowing them to meet their energy needs during the challenging winter months.
The Swedish contribution aims to alleviate Moldova’s energy crisis and reduce its reliance on Russia, which has been wielding its energy resources as a tool of influence. The support will also promote sustainable energy practices and help Moldova transition towards cleaner and more environmentally friendly energy sources.
The donor conference in Chisinau will be a crucial platform for international collaboration and solidarity, offering tangible solutions to Moldova’s energy challenges. By providing financial assistance and technical expertise, Sweden and other participating countries aim to support Moldova in achieving energy independence and ensuring the well-being of its citizens in the face of severe energy shortages.
