Sweden discovers the first case of mpox outside of Africa

The first case outside of Africa in the current outbreak of mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) was found this Wednesday in Sweden, the Minister of Social Affairs of Sweden, Jakob Forssmed reported.

“It’s definitely something we take seriously,” he said at a press conference, according to the Swedish company TT.

The case has been found in the Dubai region and it is the people in the African region who are affected by the outbreak.

“People in Sweden have received treatment and rules of conduct (to follow) according to the current recommendations,” said Olivia Wigzell.interim director general of the Public Health Agency.

The case does not increase the risk for the general Swedish population, Wigzell said, adding that no additional infection control measures are needed at this time.

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced this Wednesday the current outbreak of mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) in the Democratic Republic of Congo (CDC), and It has spread to other nearby countries, as a public health emergency of international proportions.

This is the second time in two years that this epidemic has been considered a global health threat, the alarm was raised at the beginning of May of last year after its spread was contained and the situation was considered to be under management.
