In Sweden, a married couple was forbidden to name their son “Vladimir Putin”. The office where the request was made rejected the name as it falls into the category of “inappropriate” names. This was announced on Monday, September 20, by Aftonbladet.

“The name should not insult its bearer, put him in a difficult position or for any reason be perceived as inappropriate,” the department said in a statement released on the same day.

The first statement from parents – residents of a village in southern Sweden – was also rejected in early September. Then they proposed a variant of the name for their son – simply “Putin”. He was not allowed to be used as a first name due to the fact that it is a surname. According to the authorities, an application form for registering a new name was attached to the refusal letter.
