The incident on Friday got here three months after the Scandinavian nation grew to become a full member of NATO, ending two centuries of army non-alignment.

“On Friday afternoon, a Russian SU-24 warplane violated Swedish airspace east of the southern tip of the island of Gotland. The Swedish Air Power Command warned the Russian plane in a verbal message,” the Swedish Armed Forces mentioned.

“When this was not taken under consideration and the plane didn’t deviate from its route, it was faraway from Swedish airspace by a JAS-39 Gripen,” the power mentioned in a press release. The breach was “transient”, the army mentioned.

“Russia’s actions are unacceptable and present disrespect for our territorial integrity,” mentioned Swedish Air Power Chief Jon Wikman.

Gotland is lower than 350 km from the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.

Swedish army doctrine states that whoever controls Gotland can train in depth management over air and sea visitors within the Baltic Sea.

Sweden reopened the Gotland garrison in 2018. It was closed in 2004 when army spending was minimize.

After Russia unilaterally annexed the Crimean peninsula in 2014, Sweden began to strengthen its military once more.

The final time Russia violated Swedish airspace was in March 2022, when Swedish fighter jets intercepted two Su-24 and two Su-27 planes over the island of Gotland.
