The Public Health Agency of Sweden notes a sharp increase in the number of COVID-19 infections, Day.Az reports.

But according to state epidemiologist Magnus Giesslen, there is no reason to worry.

“The SARS-CoV-2 virus is constantly mutating, which means it can be transmitted to new people, as well as to people who have immunity from previous infections and vaccinations. Since omicrons emerged, subvariants of omicrons have been spreading, and now two variants with mutations that make it easier for them to overcome the immune system are increasing and spreading,” says Magnus Giesslen.

The epidemiologist noted that the vaccine is quite poor at protecting against new infections, but is good at protecting against serious illnesses. According to him, the elderly and weak people are at high risk of infection.

“People over 80 and over 65 with underlying health conditions should be vaccinated twice a year to have year-round protection,” Gieslen said.

COVID-19 cases are also rising in Denmark and the United States.
