Swedish Armed Forces Collaborate with Vinnova to Submit Proposals for NATO’s Defense Innovation Accelerator

Stockholm, Sweden – The Swedish Armed Forces, in partnership with Vinnova, have been entrusted with the crucial task of presenting proposals for a Swedish accelerator and test centers to be considered as candidates for NATO’s Defense Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic (DIANA). This collaborative effort also involves the consultation of esteemed organizations such as the Swedish Research Council and the Norwegian Agency for Community Security and Preparedness (MSB).

The primary objective of DIANA is to identify and expedite the development of groundbreaking technologies that can effectively tackle the myriad challenges faced in the defense sector. This initiative aims to bring together start-up companies, researchers, and established technology enterprises specializing in cutting-edge fields like artificial intelligence, new materials, quantum computer technology, and biotechnology.

Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson expressed his satisfaction with the country’s participation in DIANA, stating, “Since Sweden is one of the world’s leading innovation countries, we will be able to contribute to NATO’s technological advancement in emerging domains. Simultaneously, we can leverage the extensive expertise possessed by other nations.”

This collaborative effort between the Swedish Armed Forces, Vinnova, the Swedish Research Council, and MSB reflects the commitment to drive innovation and remain at the forefront of technological advancements in defense and security. By pooling resources and expertise, this endeavor will foster a vibrant eco-system of innovation that can address critical defense challenges effectively.

The proposals outlining accelerator and test center candidates are set to be reported back to the Ministry of Defense no later than October 31, 2023. This deadline underscores the urgency with which the Swedish Armed Forces and their collaborators are working to spearhead DIANA initiatives and contribute to NATO’s technological evolution.

As Sweden’s defense landscape evolves, collaborations like this demonstrate the country’s commitment to leveraging its expertise while tapping into global synergies. The DIANA project holds the potential to revolutionize defense technology and enhance military capabilities, thereby ensuring Sweden’s continued leadership in innovation and security.
