Swimming after meals is not harmful to your health, according to experts. They say that professional and amateur swimmers should pay attention to the type of food and intensity of exercise.

“The recommendation depends on how much the individual ate and how much effort he will make,” said Wilson Roberto Catapani, president of Society of Gastroenterology of São Paulo (SGSP), to the newspaper O State of S.Paulo. “If the meal is habitual and the practice is recreational, there is no problem.”

The doctor said that the exception to the rule is the consumption of alcoholic beverages. “Its intake is contraindicated on the beach or in the pool”, he explains. If the meal is heavy and the idea is to swim at an intense pace, it is better to be careful.

“Foods rich in protein have a longer digestion time,” gastroenterologist Daniel Machado Baptista, from Hospital Nove de Julho, told the newspaper in São Paulo. These are heavy foods like barbecue and feijoada. In these cases, doctors recommend waiting three to four hours to swim in the pool or sea.

The recommendation extends to any and all intense physical activity, such as running or weight training, according to doctor Álvaro Delgado, gastroenterologist at Hospital Alemão Oswaldo Cruz, in the capital of São Paulo. “And not just swimming,” he said.

After eating, the human body prioritizes digestion. Therefore, blood flow is directed to the stomach and other organs of the digestive system. “It is not by chance that we feel drowsy after meals,” said Esthela Oliveira, sports doctor.

When someone does intense physical activity, outside or in the water, after eating, the blood that should go to the stomach is displaced to the muscles. Diversion disrupts digestion and can cause gastrointestinal problems, such as vomiting and nausea.
