Swimmer Mira Jeanne Maack has won the bronze medal at the Paralympic Games. The 20-year-old from Berlin only had to admit defeat to Alice Tai from Great Britain (1:09.96) and the Russian Viktoriya Ishchiulova (1:14.97) in the final of the S8 starting class over 100 m breaststroke in a German record time of 1:18.36 minutes on Saturday evening.

“I have achieved my goal, which I trained for three years,” said the fourth-place finisher at the World Championships, who also has high hopes for her other starts: “I’m hoping for a personal best in the 200 m individual medley, because the time has been standing for a while.” In addition to the 200 m individual medley on Sunday, Maack will also compete in the 400 m freestyle.

After Maurice Wetekam won the first German medal the day before, Maack secured the second medal in the pool for the German Disabled Sports Association (DBS). Maack was even able to beat the German record she set in the preliminary round in the morning. It is also her first medal at the Paralympic Games.

Maike Naomie Schwarz swam in her Paralympics comeback in the final of the 100 m backstroke in a German record time of 1:15.08 minutes to eighth place. The Japanese-born athlete, who had to miss the Summer Games in Tokyo due to depression, had secured the last of the eight tickets for the final in the preliminary round.

“I’m proud that I jumped into the water a second time,” said an emotional Schwarz. She struggled especially in the two or three hours before the races. “I’m trying to go through everything I learned in therapy,” explained the visually impaired 30-year-old, who will also be competing in the 50 and 100 m freestyle disciplines in Paris.

Johanna Döhler was eliminated in the S13 class over 400 m freestyle in the preliminary round in ninth place; the 14-year-old was more than twelve seconds short of the final.
