The Zurich-based start-up Swiss-Mile has raised $22 million to develop its autonomous robots, with support from Jeff Bezos and Amazon’s industrial fund.

Swiss-Mile, specializing in AI-powered robots, announces it has raised $22 million in a first funding round led by Jeff Bezos through Bezos Expeditions and HongShan. Amazon’s industrial innovation fund also participated in this funding.

Founded in April 2023 and based in Zurich, Swiss-Mile aims to create truly autonomous robots to handle various tedious tasks. Originating from the robotic systems laboratory of ETH Zurich, the company seeks to tackle the most complex challenges in mobility, autonomy, and object manipulation. The company emphasizes that it has already successfully conducted pilot projects for last-mile deliveries and the security of critical infrastructures.

Swiss-Mile is developing legged and wheeled robots powered by neural networks. The integration of reinforcement learning and supervised learning within a unified framework allows the company to equip its robots with the ability to learn autonomously from scratch and adapt to real-life deployments. The capabilities of the start-up’s robots are continuously refined using data collected from real environments and virtual scenarios.

“The Swiss-Mile team is building innovative solutions oriented towards the real world using embodied AI and robotics, bringing their expertise to various industries. We […] are thrilled to support their team, recognizing the potential these technologies represent for Amazon,” says Franziska Bossart, head of Amazon’s Industrial Innovation Fund.
