Swiss minister: All staff of Nord Stream 2 AG in Zug fired | News from Germany about Europe | DW

Nord Stream 2 AG, the operator of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, has been forced to lay off all of its staff in the Swiss city of Zug in light of the freezing of the project’s certification in Germany and the imposition of US sanctions on the firm. We are talking about more than 140 employees, Guy Parmelin, head of the federal department for economic affairs, education and research, said on the air of the public legal media company RTS on Monday, February 28. The pipeline operator himself did not comment on the situation at the time of publication.

Washington’s penalties against the company were introduced on February 23 in response to Moscow’s recognition of the independence of the self-proclaimed “Donetsk and Luhansk people’s republics.” United States President Joseph Biden had previously waived sanctions against Nord Stream 2 AG out of respect for Germany.

The day after the introduction of restrictive measures, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the start of a war against Ukraine, calling it a “special military operation in the Donbass.” The Kremlin’s decision drew sharp condemnation from many countries. Putin and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov were included in the sanctions lists of the United States, the European Union, Great Britain, Australia, Canada and Japan.
