Swiss Pediatric Surveillance Unit (SPSU) Reports Record Numbers of Rare Pediatric Diseases

The Swiss Pediatric Surveillance Unit (SPSU) has released its 2-year report for 2021-2022, detailing the cases of rare pediatric diseases and complications of common diseases in children under 16 years of age. The report, which can be found on the internet at www.spsu.ch, shows a significant increase in the number of reported cases compared to previous years.

In 2021, the SPSU recorded a total of 582 confirmed cases, including 521 cases of SARS-CoV-2 infections, 25 cases of congenital cytomegaly, 17 cases of invasive group A streptococcal infections, ten varicella-zoster virus (VZV)-associated hospitalizations, eight cases of acute flaccid paralysis as an indicator of poliomyelitis monitoring, and cases of vitamin K deficiency bleeding. The following year, in 2022, the number of confirmed cases rose to 910, with 680 cases of SARS-CoV-2 infections, 104 cases of invasive group A streptococcal infections, 81 cases of VZV-associated hospitalizations, and other rare complications.

The report highlights the importance of the SPSU in monitoring and reporting on rare pediatric diseases, providing valuable data for research and public health interventions. The SPSU is operated by pediatrics Switzerland and the Federal Office of Public Health (BAG) and receives contributions from 29 participating pediatric training hospitals.
