The passengers of the river cruise ship from Thurgau Travel continue to be unable to disembark in Vienna due to the flood. The decision lies with the Austrian authorities, Thurgau Travel wrote in a statement on Monday.

Due to the flooding caused by heavy rain on the Danube, 102 passengers and 40 crew members must remain on board a Swiss river cruise ship, “Thurgau Prestige,” in Vienna. They have been unable to leave the ship since Saturday because the gangway to the pier is flooded.

Organizer expresses surprise

The responsible travel organizer, Thurgau Travel, stated on Monday morning that the catering for everyone on board is fully ensured. The local authorities would decide when the ship could continue its journey or when passenger disembarkation would be possible.

According to passenger statements from the weekend, they were informed that they would have to remain on the ship at least until Tuesday, as reported by SRF. The “Thurgau Prestige” was supposed to travel from Linz to Budapest and back and is now stuck in Vienna until further notice.

Meteorologists had forecast the severe storms in Austria already on Thursday. Nevertheless, the river journey began on Friday. “This development was not anticipated by experts,” wrote Thurgau Travel on Monday. This is evidenced by the fact that besides the MS Thurgau Prestige, a number of other river ships are also waiting in Vienna for their onward journey.
