Switzerland Faces Sudden Downpour After Heat Wave, Lake Léman Sees Waterspout

by time news

After the heatwave, a cold shower followed this weekend. Heavy rains fell across Switzerland. A waterspout was observed early Sunday morning above Lake Geneva, off St-Prex (VD).

In Switzerland, waterspouts most often form towards the end of summer or the beginning of autumn, writes MétéoSuisse. They occur when lake temperatures are still high and cold, unstable air moves over these warm surfaces.

Waterspouts are generally harmless. The circular wind speed is much lower than in tornadoes that form on land.

Heavy rains last night

From Saturday evening to Sunday morning, between five and ten liters of rain fell per square meter in all regions of the country. The Neuchâtel region was the most soaked, with up to 75 liters per square meter. In the Lausanne region, between 50 and 65 liters of rain were recorded per square meter. MétéoSuisse expects new precipitation until early Monday morning.
