Switzerland: iPhone saves the life of a downed snowboarder – News Abroad

by time news

The Briton Tim Blakey (41) was extremely lucky on his snowboard trip in the Valais Alps in Switzerland: After he fell into a crevasse, his iPhone saved his life!

That happened: The fitness trainer was off the slopes with his snowboard – and according to his own statements, he suddenly fell five meters deep into the hidden crevice. He survived the fall – but his life was still in danger because of the cold.

Blakey’s iPhone had only three percent battery left. But he managed to get help with the built-in SOS function. To do this, he pressed the on/off button on the side of the device five times.

This informed the emergency services, and the function also sends the current location to all stored emergency contacts – and informs them that something has happened. Blakey’s lucky: he even had mobile phone reception in the crevasse!

The local rescue specialist Michael Schwarzl (54) was finally alerted. To the “View” he said: “The alarm came to me via the Sion Operations Center – I then get the coordinates on my cell phone, am picked up by helicopter and taken to the scene of the accident.”

Schwarzl continues: “He was almost unharmed, and we were able to pull him out of the gap with a simple block and tackle.”

Blakey was still badly affected by the fall. “He got very used to it, he was nervous and a little pale,” said Schwarzl. Again and again the Briton thanked for the rescue.

The mountain rescuer: “I told him he should just buy me a beer when he comes by again.”

How to activate the saving iPhone function

Open the settings on your iPhone and then click on “Emergency SOS”. There you can set how the alarm should be triggered in a dangerous situation.

There are two options: either by pressing the side button five times or by pressing and holding the side button and one of the two volume buttons.

Emergency contacts can also be stored there, which are automatically notified when the alarm is triggered.
