Switzerland will join the European Cyber ​​Security Organization (ECSO). The Federal Council approved the accession on Wednesday to strengthen cybersecurity in Switzerland and guarantee coordination with its European partners.

Which organization is this?

ECSO, a non-profit organisation founded in 2016 in Belgium, aims to launch a public-private partnership in the field of cybersecurity with the European Commission. It has around 300 members: companies of different sizes, research centres, universities, associations as well as local, regional or national public administrations from the EU Member States, the European Free Trade Association and the European Economic Area.

Today, the organisation is the only one in Europe that is both interregional and independent in this field, a sign of government. It brings together and represents relevant European public and private actors and promotes their cooperation. Swiss companies and research institutes already cooperate with ECSO.

Why did Switzerland join?

The Federal Council believes that joining will allow you to receive important information on current events concerning options and developments in the technological sector and to access a network of experts.

Relevant federal services will have access to the recommendations and priorities set for EU research programmes. These recommendations have a direct impact on calls for tenders for programmes such as Horizon Europe and Digital Europe.

Switzerland will also be able to assert its interests in the field of cybersecurity. It will be able to access ECSO working groups and discuss specific cybersecurity topics with European experts. The Confederation will also have the right to consult the documents established by these groups and participate in the development of their content.
