Many people probably know that they find swollen lymph nodes themselves or through the doctor as part of an infection. This can sometimes be very painful, but usually goes away within a few days in the course of or after the illness. The lymph nodes play an important role in the body in fighting off infections and diseases. If lymph nodes are swollen and active, they can grow up to two centimeters in size and can therefore be easily palpated. Whether a swollen lymph node is painful or not, there is not necessarily a direct link to the cause. Unless the swelling of the lymph nodes is accompanied by, for example, a sore throat and fever as an indication of possible tonsillitis. But even in such a case, it is always important to have the symptoms examined and clarified by a doctor.
