NSW Flooding: Hundreds Evacuated as SES Responds to Thousands of Calls

A severe weather system continues to batter the New South Wales coast, prompting flash flooding and widespread evacuations. Authorities report seven flood rescues occurred overnight in the Shoalhaven region, while 335 properties along the South Coast were evacuated as of Tuesday.

A senior official stated that flash flooding remains a significant concern as rainfall persists, particularly impacting Sydney, the Illawarra, and the South Coast. The New South Wales State Emergency Service (SES) is working tirelessly to respond to the escalating crisis.

SES Overwhelmed with Emergency Requests

The SES has been inundated with calls for assistance, responding to a total of 2,870 requests over the past 24 hours. The majority of these calls relate to fallen trees obstructing roads, damaging power lines, and impacting both vehicles and homes.

Multiple car crashes were reported overnight, attributed to treacherous driving conditions caused by slippery roads and scattered debris. Authorities are urging motorists to exercise extreme caution and avoid unnecessary travel.

Weather System to Ease, But Risks Remain

While conditions are beginning to improve in some areas, officials caution that the danger is far from over. “As the situation begins to calm in some areas, I remind everybody we are not out of the woods yet,” a senior official warned.

The complex weather system is currently affecting Newcastle, Sydney, the Illawarra, and the southern New South Wales coast, extending as far south as Bega. Forecasters anticipate the system will begin to dissipate as it moves further south and east on Thursday, but residents are advised to remain vigilant.

The SES continues to monitor the situation closely and is prepared to respond to further emergencies as they arise. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and heed all warnings issued by authorities.
