Grammy-Nominated Singer Jubilant Sykes Killed in Alleged Domestic Violence Incident

A celebrated voice in opera, classical, and gospel music, Jubilant Sykes, 71, was fatally stabbed at his Santa Monica, California, home on Monday evening, according to reports from local authorities. His son, Micah Sykes, 31, has been taken into custody in connection with the incident.
Officers responded to a 911 call reporting an assault in progress at Sykes’ residence at approximately 9:20 p.m. on Monday. Upon arrival, they discovered an adult male suffering from important injuries.
“Officers arrived and contacted the reporting party, who directed them into the home where they located an adult male with significant injuries,” stated Santa Monica Police Lt. Erika Aklufi. The victim, later identified as Sykes, was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities did not publicly name the victim until Tuesday.

The suspect, identified as Micah Sykes, was found inside the home and apprehended “without incident,” police reported. He is expected to be booked on suspicion of homicide,and the case will be presented to the Los angeles County District Attorney’s Office for review and potential prosecution.

I had teachers who poured thier lives into me. I had everything I needed right on campus to prepare me for my career.”

Sykes’ remarkable career spanned decades and encompassed performances at some of the world’s most prestigious venues, including the Metropolitan Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, London’s Barbican Centre, the apollo Theater, Hollywood Bowl, and the New Orleans Jazz Festival.
He achieved national recognition with his performance as the celebrant in the 2009 recording of Leonard Bernstein’s Mass, earning a Grammy nomination for his contribution.
