The word synod means “to walk together” and it was Saint Paul VI who in 1965 permanently instituted the Synod of Bishops. In 2015, Pope Francis expressed his intention to modify its structure and components, understanding that “the path of synodality is the path that God expects of the Church of the third millennium.”
Thus, in 2018, and through the apostolic constitution Episcopal communionestablished that the institution be opened to other members of the Church who were not bishops, with the aim of the Synod becoming “increasingly a privileged instrument for listening to the People of God.”
