Damascus was crowded with Arab, regional and international diplomatic delegations to meet with the new leadership in Syria after years of estrangement during the rule of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, which fell on December 8th.
The Jordanian Foreign Ministry said that Minister Ayman Al-Safadi is holding discussions in Damascus with the Commander-in-Chief of the new administration in Syria, Ahmed Al-Sharaa.
The brief statement stated, “Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriate Affairs, Ayman Al-Safadi, visits Damascus today (Monday) and meets with the Commander-in-Chief of the new administration in Syria, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, and a number of Syrian officials.”
It is the first visit by a senior Jordanian official to Syria since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime on December 8.
The Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that a high-level Qatari delegation will arrive in Damascus to hold meetings with Syrian officials.
The Qatari Foreign Ministry stated that “the Ministry’s Minister of State arrived in Damascus on board the first Qatar Airways plane since the fall of the regime.”
In a related context, Ismail Baghaei, spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, said that “there is no direct contact with the current regime in Syria.” He added, “Our entry into Syria was to prevent the advance of ISIS and the spread of terrorism to the countries of the region.”
He continued his speech, “We also helped push forward the political processes in Syria, and before what happened, we were in contact with some of these groups, but there is no direct contact with the current government.”
