Syria announced today the results of the People’s Assembly elections for the fourth legislative term, in which a significant decline in the participation rate was noted, coinciding with the major economic crisis the country is going through.

The head of the Supreme Judicial Committee for Elections, Judge Jihad Murad, said: “The turnout in the elections reached 38.16 percent,” noting that “candidates can submit appeals against the election results to the Supreme Constitutional Court on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.”

He added: “The committee was keen to provide a democratic climate by taking all necessary measures to ensure the freedom of voters and the integrity of the elections, and was equidistant from all candidates and parties, treating everyone equally and with complete neutrality, in a way that ensures the principle of equal opportunities among them during the election campaign period, pointing to the interaction of citizens and their keenness to exercise their electoral right to choose their representatives for membership in the People’s Assembly in a democratic climate.”

According to SANA, Murad explained that “the elections were held under full judicial supervision, starting from the nomination until the announcement of the election results, which reflected the broadest representation of the Syrian people in all their categories and sectors, as the winners of membership possess scientific competencies, various experiences and social backgrounds, which allows the new council to perform its national role to the fullest extent.”

During the conference, the head of the Supreme Judicial Committee for Elections presented the names of the election winners.

The People’s Assembly elections for the fourth legislative term in Syria took place on Monday, June 15, in the 8,151 polling stations in the governorates. 1,516 candidates competed, 409 of them in Sector A and 1,107 in Sector B, to win membership in the 250-seat People’s Assembly.
