Syria: Without international solidarity and support, vital humanitarian work risks drying up

by time news

Geneva (ICRC) – Millions of people in Syria today depend on humanitarian assistance. This vital work is at high risk of extreme weakening unless the support of the international community is equal to the needs of the country.

Syria deserves the solidarity and support of the whole world. For twelve years, Syrians have suffered from a relentless armed conflict, in which they have lost their loved ones, their livelihoods and their homes. For those in the northwest of the country, last month’s earthquake had profound effects and unleashed a new wave of destruction.

Today, the magnitude and gravity of the needs of the population are enormous. More and more families have great difficulty obtaining enough food in a country where food insecurity is one of the highest in the world. It is becoming increasingly difficult to access drinking water: more than 50% of water and sanitation systems have stopped working properly. Many people do not have access to medical assistance.

Despite these pressing needs, which intensified after the February earthquake, our work in Syria is significantly underfunded. Last year, this was the country where the funding for our activities was the most insufficient. It is our hope that donors will increase their support so that the people of Syria receive the help they need and deserve.
