“The new Syria will have justice and the dignity of all Syrians will be guaranteed.”
‘Freedom’ chant in the center of the capital… On the other side, people rush to the airport to escape.
Syrian rebels announced on the 8th (local time) that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had fled, announcing the capture of the capital Damascus.
According to foreign media sources such as Al Jazeera and CNN, the Syrian rebels issued a statement on this day, saying, “The tyrant President Al-Assad has fled. “We declare that Damascus has been liberated from the tyrant President Al-Assad,” he announced.
He added,“The fall of the Syrian government is the moment of freedom that came after decades of suffering,” and emphasized,“Syria awaits Syrians all over the world.”
He also said, “After 50 years of rule by the Baath Party (to which President Al-Assad belongs), 13 years of crime, tyranny, exile, and a long struggle against all types of occupying forces, today we have ended that dark period and entered a new era in Syria. “I declare,” he declared.
He then announced that he would not carry out a purge of opposition and declared,“The new Syria will be a place of peaceful coexistence where justice triumphs and the dignity of all syrians is guaranteed.”
He added, “We have turned over the dark chapter of our past and opened a new horizon for the future.”
Currently, in the center of Damascus, thousands of people are gathered on top of abandoned tanks and chanting for ‘freedom.’ On the other hand, the Damascus airport is becoming extremely crowded due to the influx of people trying to leave Syria. There was also testimony that there were almost no government personnel at the airport to conduct security checks.
The day before, Syrian rebels began sieging the capital Damascus. As the siege was narrowed, the government forces retreated.
Recently, the rebels sequentially occupied major strongholds of Aleppo in the northwest, Hama in the center, and daraa on the border with Israel.
