System76, a US system distributor known for its gamer-friendly Linux distribution Pop!_OS, has released the first alpha version of its new desktop environment, Cosmic. This free and open-source desktop is designed to be completely new and powerful enough to create custom operating systems.
Our declared goal is to liberate the computer with a completely new desktop environment that is also powerful enough to create custom operating systems – for users, developers, and manufacturers of all devices with a screen. – System76
While Cosmic is still in its early stages, the developers describe it as “incomplete” and “unstable” due to being the first public alpha. However, a subsequent version, Cosmic Epoch 2, is expected to bring significant feature updates. System76 also emphasizes the importance of consistency and customization within the newly developed graphical user interface (GUI). The numerous themes with wallpapers and icons are designed to make Cosmic highly customizable.
The Cosmic desktop is built on the open-source programming language Rust and utilizes the Wayland display server protocol. It also includes a set of native apps written in Rust. Those interested in trying out Cosmic can do so most easily with the latest alpha version of Pop!_OS, available for AMD, Intel, and Nvidia systems.
The first alpha version of Cosmic is also available for several other popular Linux distributions, including Arch Linux, Fedora Linux, OpenSUSE, Serpent OS, Redox OS, and NixOS.
The following standalone Cosmic apps are already included in the desktop: Cosmic Terminal, Cosmic Files, Cosmic Edit, the Cosmic App Store, and the Cosmic Settings.
