Benedek Danka and Bóbis Botond, who returned home with a silver medal from the Chinese Universiade, completed the framework of the Zue.hu Szeged VE OB I. men’s water polo team, which thus had roughly a week and a half to fully prepare for the qualification of the BENU Hungarian Cup on Friday and Saturday.
– I would have been happy if we had more time to work with the full squad, because there was a new player who joined late, and also a goalkeeper in the person of Benedek Danka. The others also found it difficult to adapt to the new playing system, since we have four new players, and I also touched the youth team again, so I will have a very young team again – said Csaba Kiss, the head coach of the Szeged team, to Délmagyarország.
During the narrow preparation period, there was no shortage of two goals between each other, but Csaba Kiss’s students also played in the youth team. The main rehearsal was held on Wednesday morning at the home of Metalcom Szentes, which is also preparing for the Hungarian Cup.
– Apart from the first quarter, I was satisfied with the game we played, we played water polo quite well compared to the fact that many of them were playing a game for the first time in a Szeged cap. Of course, we still have many mistakes to correct, which we may not be able to fix by our weekend in Eger. The real test of strength is when we play against a foreign team, the boys feel that they still need it, continued the former excellent water polo player-turned-trainer.
Szeged will play BVSC from 12:30 p.m. on Friday, the host Eger from 6 p.m., and KSI on Saturday from 11 a.m. in the qualification, from which the first two places in each group will advance to the top eight.
– We will have a hard time, as BVSC was a good team last season as well, and now they are getting stronger from OSC with Erik Bundschuh and Erik Csacsovszky. Eger also kept its excellent legionnaires, they are dangerous, especially at home. KSI has become younger, as they always take the biggest talents away from them. For now, it is not crystal clear to me where we can finish, but we are traveling to advance – he spoke about the balance of power.
Metalcom Szentes will host its cup group, and the composition of its squad will be revealed on Thursday afternoon.
