T-Mobile: Hacker sells private data – 100 million customers affected | Life & Knowledge

by time news

Is it the biggest data breach in cellular history? An unknown hacker offers personal information from around 100 million T-Mobile customers on the Darknet. In addition to name and mobile phone number, part of the data records would also be highly sensitive information such as the address, call lists and social security number.

For a quarter of a million dollars

As the US magazine Vice reports that a hacker is currently offering the data set for six Bitcoin (around a quarter of a million euros) on the Darknet. He describes the content of the hack with the words: “T-Mobile USA: Complete customer data.” However, only information from around 30 million customers is available for sale, as the hacker has allegedly already found a buyer for the entire data set.

Whether customers outside the US are also affected is just as unclear as the cause of the data leak. A US spokesman confirmed to the news agency Reuters that T-Mobile knew the report and was investigating the process. A German Telekom spokesman pointed out to BILD that T-Mobile USA uses its own servers. In the event of a data leak, German users would not be affected.

T-Mobile has repeatedly been the target of hackers in the USA in recent years. The attackers stole call information in December 2020 and payment data in March of the same year. In 2018 and 2019, the company also lost personal data of its customers. However, only parts of the approximately 100 million US customers were ever affected by the data leaks. This time it could be everyone.
