The mobile communications provider T-Mobile US won more contract customers in the highly competitive US market in the second quarter than its competitors and thus also exceeded market expectations. As the subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom announced on Thursday after the stock market closed, it had around 760,000 new contract customers in the months of April to June, after 538,000 in the previous quarter.

T-Mobile US was able to attract more customers with low-cost package deals than its rivals AT&T or Verizon. Analysts had only expected 708,800 new customers. For the full year, T-Mobile US is now a bit more optimistic and expects to add 5.6 to 5.9 million subscribers instead of 5.3 to 5.7 million as previously expected.

However, the discount battle on the US mobile communications market made itself felt in sales: it fell by 2.6 percent to $19.20 billion in the second quarter, more than analysts had expected. The company was able to increase its operating profit more than fivefold to $3.79 billion.

T-Mobile US shares fell 2 percent in after-hours trading.

The company was the Bonn parent’s growth driver last year. The US division contributed around two-thirds of the revenues and the operating profit to the consolidated result.
