T2 at BER: This is what the low-cost airline terminal at the capital’s airport looks like

by time news

The new capital airport BER was lucky enough to start operating in the middle of the pandemic on October 31, 2020, when air traffic was reduced to a minimum. The processes in the areas of check-in, security control and boarding could only be optimized with a fraction of the passenger volume. Nevertheless, due to a lack of staff, passengers repeatedly had to wait for hours.

Since before Corona the number of passengers had risen continuously to more than 35 million in 2019, the planned capacities at BER and its terminal were no longer sufficient. In addition to extensions to the main terminal, another terminal was built in record time: the construction of Terminal 2 was decided in summer 2017 and completed in summer 2020.

After two years in a slumber

Unlike Terminal 1, the building was not designed by the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners from Hamburg, but was built as a sober functional building. A box 240 meters long, 40 meters wide and 15 meters high. Instead of wood paneling and natural stone floors, the materials are simple and economical, with open ceilings like in an industrial building. T2 has a total gross area of 23,000 square meters and is designed for six million passengers a year.

The terminal is designed for the customers of low-cost airlines and is connected to the North Pier, where there are no passenger boarding bridges, but passengers can access Gates B30-B45 and then stairs to the outside of the jets.

Aircraft with arriving passengers are parked on the apron at the North Pier in the immediate vicinity of Terminal 2. From there, passengers go to T2 via the connecting bridges. After a short walk through the plaza you will reach the three baggage claim areas on the ground floor.
