5th gold medal of his career
The 6th gold medal for the Korean team at the 2024 Paris Paralympics has been won by Kim Young-geon (40, Gwangju Metropolitan City Hall), a table tennis representative.
Kim Young-geon defeated world No. 1 Wanchai Chaiut (Thailand) 3-2 (6-11 11-9 11-7 9-11 11-5) in the final of the men’s singles (MS4) table tennis tournament held at Arena 4 in Paris, France on the 7th (local time).
This is Korea’s sixth gold medal in this competition. With Kim Young-geon’s gold medal, Korea has exceeded its goal for this competition. Korea had originally aimed for five gold medals.
This is Kim Young-geon’s fifth Paralympic gold medal. Following Lee Hae-gon (7, table tennis), he is tied for second place with Kim Im-yeon (shooting) as the Korean with the most Paralympic gold medals.
After winning, Kim Young-geon said, “Chae-wook is a strong player at the front, so I tried to shake the corners a lot, and it worked,” and added, “After dislocating my shoulder last April, I overdid it and ruptured my intestines. It was hard and stressful because of the consecutive injuries, but I got to where I am now thanks to the help of many people around me.”
In particular, Kim Young-geon did not forget his wife, who helped him a lot by his side.
Kim Young-geon expressed his love for his wife, saying, “My wife told me, ‘Even if you lose, it’s cool, so just do your best.’ I worked hard because I wanted to be a better husband. Even now, I miss my wife the most. I want to see her soon.”
Korean table tennis won 14 medals, including 2 gold, 3 silver, and 9 bronze medals, at this Paralympic Games, earning the most medals among the participating sports.
